Hypertension

Hypertension is the most common chronic disease among the elderly in Hong Kong. According to the 2014/15 Population Health Survey of the Department of Health, it is estimated that 64.8% of the Hong Kong population aged 65-84 may suffer from high blood pressure.


High blood pressure refers to chronically high levels of pressure on the arterial walls. According to the definition of the World Health Organization, high blood pressure refers to the blood pressure higher than 140 (upper pressure) / 90 (lower pressure) mmHg in the resting state of the human body after repeated measurements.


Cause:

  • Excessive salt intake Obesity, static life style Smoking, excessive drinking Lack of sleep Stress Family history of high blood pressure Age and other diseases or physical changes, such as kidney disease, endocrine disorders, etc.


Persistently high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems such as:

  • stroke coronary heart disease heart failure chronic kidney disease premature death

Prevention method:

  • Have a balanced and low-salt diet to maintain physical activity and a moderate weight Quit smoking, avoid alcohol, and manage stress Regular blood pressure measurements can detect high blood pressure early for appropriate treatment.
