Elderly falls

My 70-year-old mother with osteoporosis trips over the step into the washroom without noticing. She yells to us in severe pain. When I lift her, I suspect her calf bone is broken. What should I do?

  • Comfort her and check on her condition first, let her take a rest for a moment
  • Call an ambulance, take her to the hospital for healing her injuries.
  • Do not attempt to heal her unless you are a professionally trained medical personnel.

Elderly fall can cause broken bones, inability to walk and long-term care afterwards. Carers should try all means to prevent it.  Carers should

  • help the elders to conduct more muscle training and stretching exercises to improve body balance
  • remind them to pay attention to tripping hazards at home
  • always stay alert of their surroundings
  • keep walkways clear of clutter and maintain adequate lighting where they walk
